Don’t just believe us, hear from our recent graduate. Will, BT Graduate Degree Studied: Bachelor of Law Why did you apply for the BT Graduate Program? I’ve always been a Westpac customer but had never really considered working for a bank. When I decided to make the move from the legal profession into financial services, one of the things that drew me to the BT graduate program was the advantage of the intensive 12-month development program, which would provide an excellent foundation for my career in banking. If you are interested in getting a broad understanding of wealth management, and are passionate about people, then you’ll love the BT graduate program. What else have you been involved in? In late September last year, I applied to attend the Lilla Sports and Storytelling Festival as part of the Westpac Group volunteers. We were to work with Dentons, the Watarrka Foundation and Remote Education Tours to bring together students from three remote Indigenous communities in Central Australia for three days of activities focused on health, well-being and continued learning. I secured funding from the business to attend the festival, which was without a doubt one of the most rewarding experiences of my year. The support that Westpac provides for its employees to engage in initiatives like this is incredible. What has been your program highlight? For me, the highlight of the graduate program has been the people I have met throughout the last 12 months. The support that graduates receive from the people who help administer the program, such as ex-graduates and business leaders – who will always take time out of their day to help guide, explain concepts and mentor you – was amazing. It meant that I was constantly meeting new and interesting people who were genuinely interested in supporting me. As someone with limited experience in financial services, I found this very generous and it helped make my transition into the field much easier than it could have been. The best thing about Westpac in general is its culture. Everyone has a niche that they are passionate about, whether this relates to the day-to-day responsibilities of our roles, our professional development or social issues we believe in. Through the core values of Westpac and the breadth of its employee action groups, we’re encouraged to explore our individual passions in a flexible workplace of like-minded people.
