Meet Sam, 2016 Graduate

Financial Markets & Treasury

Why did you choose a graduate program at Westpac Group?
Westpac has one of the best graduate programs in the country and a large Financial Markets dealing room in which I could follow my passion for trading. The Westpac trading floor has some of the best employees in the industry and I proud to be part of it.

What advice can you offer for those applying to the program?
Seize all opportunities. Graduates get the opportunity to have four rotations of which it is recommended that one of the four are spent in trading and one in sales to gain a greater understanding of the business and individual skill set. Don’t be afraid to expand your horizons outside of your rotations, people will respect this initiative and it will help you build your personal brand in the wider business.

What rotations have you experienced?
I was given the opportunity to rotate in a very broad range of areas on my program which allowed me to see a large part of the business. My rotations included Credit Relative Value, Tailored Deposits, Rates Trading, Institutional Sales and FX Trading. All of my rotations allowed me to get my hands dirty and really add value to the businesses.

What do you enjoy about working at Westpac Group?
The like minded people. Also Westpac has a very diverse workplace which is extremely welcoming.

In Financial markets every day is different, bringing new challenges and opportunities.

How have you developed across your graduate year?
Starting out day one I was relatively new to markets but keen to learn and immerse myself in the program. The Westpac graduate managers really cater for the graduates, going above and beyond the requirements to provide the best opportunities. Over the duration of the year I have completed my Australian Financial Markets Associated (AFMA) accreditation, attended a two week simulated trading course, completed an excel visual basic coding training course, attended multiple Bloomberg training courses and much more. The program has been a great experience and has ultimately allowed me to grow and develop my understanding of markets over the course of the year allowing me to successfully obtain my next role in the commodities trading team.
